Former presidential spokesman and media analyst, Dr. Reuben Abati, has urged Nigerians to throw their support behind Mexico in the tournament’s opening match against South Africa.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise News, which he co-hosts, on Thursday, Abati said that backing Mexico would help Nigerians avoid giving South Africans another reason to accuse them of taking over opportunities meant for them.
His remarks come against the backdrop of repeated xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa. Over the years, many Nigerians have reportedly faced physical assaults, harassment, and destruction of property, prompting interventions by the Nigerian government, including the evacuation of affected citizens.
The Mexico – South Africa match on Thursday, June 11, 2026, takes off 7pm Nigerian time.
