Abia State will once again be proudly represented on the international sporting stage as Nworgu Esther Ogechika has been selected as the state’s sole representative among the seven para-powerlifters named in Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The Games, scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 2, 2026, will take place at Glasgow, Scotland,with Team Nigeria currently undergoing a pre-competition training tour in Aberdeen, Scotland, ahead of the opening ceremony.
Although this marks Esther Nworgu’s first appearance at the Commonwealth Games, it is not the first time an athlete from Abia State has represented Nigeria at the prestigious multi-sport event. Her selection is a testament to her dedication and consistent excellence in para powerlifting both on the national and international stage.
Her qualification also reflects the sustained commitment of the Abia State Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, to youth empowerment and sports development. Through strategic investment in sports, athlete welfare, and talent development, the administration has continued to create an enabling environment for Abia athletes to excel and compete at the highest levels.
The Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba Nwadinma, has also been instrumental in driving the state’s sports revival agenda. Under his leadership, the Ministry has intensified efforts in grassroots talent identification, athlete preparation, and support for elite competitors, resulting in increased representation of Abia athletes in national and international competitions.
As Esther Nworgu prepares to compete against some of the world’s finest para powerlifters, the people of Abia State remain optimistic that she will make both the state and Nigeria proud.
Her participation is not only a personal milestone but also another significant achievement for Abia’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for world class athletes.
