Owo Ala community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State has commenced moves to restore electricity supply to the community following the alleged abandonment of the electricity project by the Abia State Government.
Chairman of the Owo Ala Welfare Union, Dr. Ugochukwu Nwankwo, who disclosed this in a public statement issued on Saturday, September 12, 2026, stated that their community has been without electricity for several months, even after the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) restored electricity supply to other communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area.
He said the community decided to take action after several unsuccessful attempts to draw ASOPADEC’s attention to its electricity crisis.
Nwankwo described the situation as painful, particularly as neighbouring communities have regained electricity while Owo Ala remains in darkness.
The Chairman disclosed that the Owo Ala Welfare Union has established an Electricity Restoration Fund Raising Committee to mobilise resources for the restoration project.
The Committee is headed by Lagos-based businessman, Chief Ben Azuogu Emeruwa, who, according to Nwankwo, will appeal to well-meaning sons and daughters of Owo Ala in Nigeria and the diaspora to make significant financial contributions towards the project.
Nwankwo expressed confidence that members of the community would respond positively to the fundraising initiative and support efforts to restore electricity to Owo Ala.

The Owo Ala Welfare Union chairman also expressed appreciation to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), particularly the member representing Abia State on the board of the Commission, Dr. Eruba Dimgba, for the solar street lights project completed in the community.
He noted that the completed solar street lighting project has brought a new lease of life to residents of the community, adding that hoodlums who used to take advantage of darkness to steal property belonging to government and individuals in the community do not have a hiding place anymore.
