The Mayor of Ukwa West Local Government Area in Abia State, Mr. Newman Azu, and other critical stakeholders, on Friday, intervened in the clashes between the youths of Obibor Community in Ukwa West and Hausa herders.
The engagement, which had the leadership of Obibor Town Union and representatives of the Hausa community in attendance, was aimed at stopping the destruction of cash crops by Hausa herders in the area, and resolving a case which the Hausa community had reported to the Nigeria Police against certain persons in the Obibor community.
Speaking during the meeting, the Mayor of Ukwa West admonished the Hausa to refrain from further damaging of cash crops in Obibor and its environs and appealed to the Obibor people to exercise patience, as the meeting would bring everlasting peace in the matter.
A reconciliatory Committee was set up chaired by Hon. Miracle Nwarie, with the Commander of Abia State Homeland Security Ukwa West Chapter as member.
The Hausa community was directed to withdraw the case from the Rapid Response Squad, (RRS), Obehie with immediate effect, and desist from causing the arrest of Obibor residents or harassing them.
Present during the meeting were; HRH Eze Obioma Levi Nworgu, a representative from the Nigerian Army, the DPO of Obehie Police Station, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Ukwa West chapter, Rev. Prince Nana, representative of the DSS, OC Special Investigation Bureau (SIB), and Commander Homeland Security. Others were Hon. Chibuzor Nwancha, Chief Chibuzor Dick, Udo Promise Sunday, Deacon Dickson Dike, Chief Sylvester Oforji, and Chief Gideon Kanu (representative of the Council of Chiefs).
