Prominent Asa Son Takes Swipe At Sir Don Ubani For Describing Ukwa West LP Members As Timid

A prominent son of Ukwa West Local Government Area in Abia, Mr. Hillary Onyedi, has reacted to the the article written by former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Abia State, Sir Don Ubani wherein members of the Ukwa West Labour Party, LP, members were described as timid and shy.

In a publication dated July 7, 2024, titled, “Channel Your Energies Right, Sir Don”, Onyedi wrote:

Our attention was inescapably drawn to a recent publication made by Sir Don Ubani, with the title, “Though Commendable, Appointment Not An Alternative To A Permanent Secretary” The default inclination would have been to overlook such drivel especially coming from someone that has a near pathological love for spotlight and vainglory. But this time, he overreached himself and needed to be put in his proper place. And we are going to do this with a grave sense of responsibility.

As a man of titles in both religious and secular quarters, and one who served prominently in successive administrations in the past, it is saddening that Chief Sir Don Ubani is yet to learn how to engage meaningfully in public discourse without being uncouth, abusive and denigrating to others especially dignitaries that he supposedly once was. That he would always condescend to gross indignity and insolence every time he writes about the person of the Governor, Dr Alex Otti, should give people of sane mind and character some measure of concern.

While we uphold the fact that citizens should hold government accountable at all times, we also believe this should be done within acceptable bounds and not to take liberties with truth and reason. Truth be told, it would only take a very strange and benighted person to deny the giant leaps of progress Abia State has made under Dr Alex Otti as Governor. And to attempt lamely, to exclude Asa from this progress because an indigene of hers is not yet a Permanent Secretary in the State Civil Service would be most uncharitable and contemptuous.

For the records, the Governor has, within one year in office, completed and commissioned a strategic road project, flagged off the Abia Innovation Industrial Park (AIIP), commenced the reconstruction of the Obehie – Ezendioma – Asa High School road, and embarked on the Asa Civic Centre project that is nearing completion all in Ukwa West LGA. But for the risk of sounding immodest or preempting authority, one would have given off information about a number of laudable projects for Asa that would soon be unveiled by this administration.

However, Sir Don Ubani sees these things differently and rather hypocritically. His jaw-dropping hypocrisy became too manifest in his latest voyage into the absurd. Barely 24 hours after he called the appointees of the Governor from Ukwa West timid and shy, the same man took to a WhatsApp platform to eulogize the General Manager of the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, ASOPADEC, for a wonderful work done on the Asa Civic Centre. Tell me, how else can one describe this level of double speak, if not that it proceeds from a man with split personality who is constantly but needlessly seeking attention.

Quite apparently, it is the cant of a hypocrite in the order and mold of Sir Don Ubani who a few weeks ago, in a meeting of the Asa Development Union, ADU, would move a resounding motion for a vote of confidence on the Dr. Alex Otti-led government only to turn now to repudiate same simply because his younger brother, Stanford Nnadozie Ubani, a Director in the State Civil Service who failed dismally in the qualifying exams, was not made a Permanent Secretary.

And we make bold to state, for the umpteenth time, that Sir Don Ubani’s interest in this very matter is purely self-serving and disingenuous and holds no altruistic value for Asa as a people. His is the classic case of a bird trying to make a soft nest for her own eggs. It would not come as a surprise therefore, that irrespective of the number of persons appointed from, and projects executed in Asa by Dr Alex Otti, either now or in the future, all would still remain insignificant so long as Sir Don Ubani’s primitive tactics at cheap blackmail does not succeed in railroading his sibling into the Permanent Secretary position.

Interestingly, any appointee who does not defer to Oga Don’s brash and obnoxious sentiments but subscribes to the rule of decency is labeled timid and shy. And you would be tempted to ask, how much development did our uncle’s political bravado in the last 24 years bring to his own immediate community, Umuikuikor before we talk of Asa in general? I do not think we should be telling our dear sage where he should be channeling his energies at this time. There is time for everything.

Finally, If Sir Don Ubani has any useful advice for his brothers in government, he should explore the right channels and get close to them instead of spewing vitriols that would only diminish whatever is left of his personality.

Hillary Onyedi is the Special Assistant to the Honourable Commissioner for Environment.

  1. I concur to your submission on the 6th paragraph,Sir Don Ubani Is only interested of his younger brother becoming a permanent secretary in Abia state civil service.

Sir Don Ubani doesn’t have ASA people in his mind , if going by your submission in your 8th paragraph, that he didn’t attract any Development in his Community, Umuikuikor in particular and ASA in General for the pasted 24 years he has been in power during PDP administration in Abia state.

Conclusively: During his last 8 years appointment as the Deputy Chief of staff to the Deputy Governor of Abia state, he couldn’t attract any single project in Ukwa west.
