The Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, has stated that the task of cleaning up the environment was not the responsibility of government alone.

He stated this on Monday at the Enitona Hotel, Aba during an interactive session with critical stakeholders of the Environment.

Addressing the large gathering, which comprise leaders of various market associations in Abia State under the aegis of the Abia State Market Amalgamated Traders Association, (ASMATA), Landlords’ Associations and other members of the business community, Ogbonna explained that the World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year with the aim of raising global awareness and encouraging action to protect the environment.

He highlighted the laudable efforts the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has made to give Abia State a pride of place, ranging from the monthly state-wide environmental clean-up exercise, regular de-silting of major drains/gutters to waste evacuations in Aba and Umuahia metropolis.

The Commissioner called on all Abians and residents of Abia State to use the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5 to clean up their surroundings and business premises, adding that government cannot do the work alone.

According to Commissioner, “The message is very simple; let us unite and clean our environment. Let us support our Governor to make Abia truly the number one, and the cleanest State in Nigeria. Let us make our participation count.”

In their various responses, the stakeholders were unanimous and lavish in praising the Governor and his able team for the transformation of Abia, especially Aba that has witnessed tremendous change in the last one year, and pledged their unalloyed support for the administration. They equally expressed delight in the vision of the government to carry them along in the activities marking the World Environment Day 2024 and, assured that they would not only spread the message but also mobilise their members to actively participate in the general clean-up exercise to mark the World Environment Day on June 5.
