Abia State has emerged as Nigeria’s second-best-performing state in the 2026 Sub-national Climate Governance Performance Ranking, marking a remarkable improvement from its 28th position in 2025.
The state secured the second position on Thursday at the Wells Carlton Hotel, Abuja, during the 2026 Sub-national Climate Governance Performance Rating organised by the Society for Planet and Prosperity in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment.
Abia State’s impressive rise from 28th place in 2025 to second position in 2026 represents a significant milestone in its climate governance efforts, placing it among the leading states in Nigeria in environmental sustainability and climate action.
According to a press release issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Ministry of Environment, Mrs Obioma Chidinma Success, the achievement reflects the commitment of the Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, to building a resilient, environmentally sustainable and climate-responsive state.
The Sub-national Climate Governance Performance Rating and Ranking provides a comparative assessment of how states are building and implementing systems for effective climate action. Key areas assessed include institutional arrangements and governance structures, climate policies and action plans, climate-related budgeting and financing, implementation and monitoring of climate projects, and public transparency and visibility of climate actions. The methodology places emphasis on documented evidence and verification of reported actions.
