The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Abia State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to professional excellence, ethical communication, institutional partnerships and international visibility, as it reflects on its history, challenges and contributions, to the growth of public relations practice in Nigeria.
The position was highlighted during an in-house lecture titled “Abia NIPR: Where We Came From, Where We Are and Where We Must Be,” delivered by Sir Sam Ogbonna, Esq. anipr, at the Chapter’s October 2026 General Meeting.
The presentation traced the history of the Chapter, celebrated the contributions of past leaders and outlined priorities for strengthening the organisation under the leadership of its current Chairman, Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, fnipr.
According to the paper, Abia has played a significant role in the development of public relations in Nigeria, having produced three former national presidents of the Institute: Chief Kanu Offonry, who served from 1968 to 1972; Chief Bob Ogbuagu, from 1980 to 1984; and Mazi Mike Okereke, from 1988 to 1993.
The lecture described their contributions, alongside those of other practitioners from the state, as part of the professional legacy that continues to shape public relations practice in Nigeria.
It also traced the establishment of the Abia State Chapter to the early years following the creation of Abia State in 1991, highlighting the leadership of its pioneers, including the late Mr Peter Njoku, Chief Felix E. Erondu, fnipr, and the late Chief Chiadikobi I. Abarikwu.
The paper acknowledged subsequent administrations for their contributions to membership development, institutional stability, professional training and improved engagement with government and other stakeholders.
Among the historical milestones highlighted was the appointment of a five-member Caretaker Committee in 2016, chaired by Sir Sam Ogbonna, Esq., which oversaw the Chapter’s affairs during a period of internal challenges.
The paper also recognised the administrations of former chairmen, including Hon. Princely Kingsley Ngunu, Sir Anyaso Anyaso and Deacon Felix Olunkwa, for their respective contributions to the Chapter’s leadership and growth.
Assessing the Chapter’s current direction, the presentation identified the administration of Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, fnipr, which assumed office in January 2026, as a period focused on strategic planning, transparency, role clarity and stronger institutional relationships.
It highlighted the maiden executive retreat organised in February 2026 for the newly inaugurated Executive Council in Umuahia, describing it as an opportunity to establish priorities and strengthen administrative coordination.
The paper further listed partnerships and stakeholder engagements, the launch of PR Pulse Abia as a learning platform to encourage public dialogue and constructive engagement on communication and other topical issues.
Other activities cited included the celebration of World Public Relations Day in July 2026 under the theme “The Golden Age of Strategic Public Relations,” outreach to the School for the Blind in Afara, Umuahia, and radio advocacy programmes.
According to Sam Ogbonna, these activities reflect the Chapter’s efforts to promote ethical communication, public trust, professional visibility and stronger relationships with stakeholders.
He called on members to participate actively in preparations for the international gathering and other engagements designed to raise awareness and strengthen Abia’s representation.
Continuing , the lecturer urged members to maintain high ethical standards, cautioned against propaganda, emphasising that sustainable public relations practice must be built on truth, integrity, responsible engagement and respect for professional ethics.
Looking ahead, the paper identified stronger membership participation, financial responsibility, professional development, institutional partnerships and improved administrative capacity as important areas for the Chapter’s continued growth.
In its concluding recommendations, the paper called for sustained collaboration and unity, while expressing the aspiration for Abia NIPR to establish its own permanent secretariat, similar to those of other professional bodies in the state.
It maintained that the Chapter’s historical achievements should serve as a foundation for greater professional impact and international recognition.
