As part of efforts to curb the rising insecurity in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, the Executive Chairman, Pastor Dike Briggs Nwankwo, has announced a restriction on the movement of commercial motorcycle operators between 6:00am and 6:00 am with effect from Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The directive comes barely one week after the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, prohibited commercial motorcycle operations in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia following growing security concerns across the state.
According to a press release dated June 25, 2026, and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Chidi Gift Onyedikachi, the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and protection of lives and property.
The statement reads in part:

“The Government, in collaboration with the Commercial Motorcycle Operators’ Union, shall undertake the profiling and registration of all motorcycle operators within the Local Government Area for proper identification and enhanced security monitoring.
“All commercial motorcycle operators are hereby directed to relocate their loading and parking activities to the designated area in front of the market, as agreed with the Union leadership, in order to prevent obstruction at the junction and ensure the free flow of traffic.
“Any motorcycle operator or individual found operating outside the approved hours or violating any of these directives shall have his motorcycle impounded while the individual will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”
