The Honourable Commissioner of Environment Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna has described the protection of the environment from industrial waste as a top priority in achieving a green, clean and healthy environment.

The Honourable Commissioner stated this, recently, while being conducted round the waste treatment facilities of the Nigerian Breweries, Aba.

Mr. Ogbonna noted that the high volume of water consumption in use during production results in large brewing effluent that may have negative effects on the environment if not properly treated, channeled and discharged.

He therefore expressed great level of satisfaction with the Nigerian Breweries, Aba, for their consistency in maintaining global standards for environmental management, noting that the Ministry’s inspection tour of the facilities has confirmed the company’s adherence to best practices and compliance to environmental standards in all her processes and operations.

The Commissioner however observed with much concern, the menace of the gully erosion at Onyeado Road beside the NB premises and promised that his Ministry will take necessary measures to mitigate the situation.

Briefing the Honourable Commissioner and his team earlier, the Brewery Manager, Aba, Mr. Lolu Ogunkeye explained that following in the tradition of the parent company the Heineken Group, Nigeria Breweries, Aba, has a well-structured waste water treatment plant that ensures that clean waste water is discharged into the river while the solid, known as sewage sludge, is recovered in part as compost (fertilizer) for agriculture and for thermal utilisation as biogas for firing the boilers.

According to Mr. Ogunkeye, such well-coordinated waste management system is aimed at achieving resources conservation and protection of human health and that of the environment. It equally minimises the amount and toxicity of waste creation resulting from the company’s production activities.

He praised the giant developmental strides of the Dr. Alex Otti-led government in the State and pledged the company’s continuous commitment to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment across her operations and helping to create a more sustainable world.

The Honourable Commissioner was accompanied on the familiarization tour by some management staff of the Ministry.
