The Mayor of Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Mr. Newman Azu, has urged communities in his area to pay off their accumulated electricity bills to facilitate a restoration of power.

Speaking with Newsportal on Monday, Azu said arrangements had been concluded with the service provider, Geometric Power Limited, to restore light to all the Communities in Ukwa West, but the private company was waiting for the Communities to clear their outstanding bills which it inherited from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC.

Azu, who disclosed that the total outstanding against the communities amounted to over N37m, said he had held meetings with the Traditional Rulers and the Chairmen of the various Communities in Ukwa to appeal to them to get a buy-in of their people in order to ensure that the area began to enjoy the twenty hours power supply being offered by Geometric.

The Mayor said that only few communities had shown readiness to pay their outstanding bills, adding that Geometric’s position was that it would be practically impossible to give power to the few communities without the debtor-communities benefitting from it.

He appealed to individual community leaders to throw their weight behind their people to raise money to pay off their bills so that all villages in the area can begin to enjoy electricity light.
