The Mayor of Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Mr. Newman Azu, has felicitated all workers in his area, adding that Nigerian workers were the engine room for the Country’s economic development.

In his goodwill message, Azu stated that May 1 should be a day of sober reflection for the worker to take stock of how they fared in the past, and how they should continue in future.

His statement reads in part:

“As you are aware, it is a day of sober reflection during which workers and pensioners take stock on how they fared in the past and reflect on the future.

“I wish to state very passionately and without fear of equivocation that workers are the very essence of life, for without them nothing moves.

“Workers are the engine room of any local government, state and country’s economic development, and therefore the growth force propels that local government, state and the country forward.

“I wish to convey my heartfelt congratulations and esteemed regards to you all and also pray that the grace of God will give you strength to break grounds with ease in the ensuing year.

“Therefore, I urge us all to uphold the biblical injunction to wit: “there is dignity in labour, because all labour, there is profit” (Proverbs 14:23). In upholding this injunction, we should be deliberate in the way we handle our staff, servers and assistants. We must always make them see the dignity in their labour. I urge all workers to all keep the fire burning.”
