A Legal practitioner, Barrister Sam Ogbonna has commended the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti for working with the promises he made during the political campaigns in mind.
In a statement released on Saturday, Ogbonna said since the Governor assumed duties, local government pensioners have been receiving their monthly stipends as promised.
Ogbonna, who is from Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State further said that if the immediate past administration in the State had even been consistent with the half pension it was paying retirees, many of them would not have died.
According to him, some of the petitioners who developed high blood pressure as a result of the non-payment of their stipends could not afford the necessary medical care they desperately needed.
He said, “When Governor Alex Otti was campaigning, he promised to pay workers and pensioners same time. Initially, I thought that it was one of those gimmicks of a politician whose ultimate aim is to win election. Surprisingly, Dr. Alex Otti, the Executive Governor of Abia State has proved that a politician’s word can be his bond.”
“Those judging the performance of the present administration in the State ought to exercise restraint as it is too early to castigate a government that is less than 100 days in Office. If the immediate past administration had done the needful and did not take pleasure in the inhumane treatment to the senior citizens, we would have been better than we are today”, he added.
