The Ukwa West chapter of the Labour Party, LP, on Saturday unveiled a prominent son of Asa land, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, as the leader of the Ipu West Ward of the party.
In the ceremony which held at the country home of Ogbonna at Owaza in the Ukwa West Local Government Area, the party used the opportunity to inaugurate the Executive Committee members of the Ward.
In his speech, Ogbonna, who described the position given to him as a privilege, called on all members of the LP to recognise the fact that there is so much work for them to do to ensure victory for the governorship candidate of the party, Dr. Alex Otti in the 2023 general elections.
He disclosed that he was pushed by the integrity and vision of Otti, and his commitment and love for the development of Abia State to join the Labour Party, adding that it would be pertinent for all those who love him to also internalise those virtues in order to build a strong and virile platform to prosecute a common Agenda.
Ogbonna stated that he had known the Abia State governorship hopeful for many years, and assured the party members that the Otti he knows would deliver on his manifesto to the State.
He appealed to the party leadership at both the Ward and Local Government Area level to continue to show strong dedication, stressing that unity and love, and the inculcation of the spirit of give and take by all would definitely translate into winning more members for the Labour Party.
He also said that the joining of LP by both Otti and the presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi at the same period has created a wonderful synergy that members must take advantage of in order to dislodge the All Progressives Congress, APC at the national level and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State for their failure to deliver dividend of democracy to the people.
Ogbonna lamented the total decay of public infrastructure in the State, particularly in the Ukwa West Local Government Area, adding that it would be a disaster to fold hands and watch the PDP retain power in the State.
The Leader of the Labour Party in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Pastor Nwadike Nwankwo, who was represented by Chief P. C. Agomuo, while unveiling the Ward Leader, said the party had been positioning itself consistently towards taking over governance in Abia State.
He described the Ward Leader, Ogbonna, as a man with the capacity and drive to mobilise resources for the continued growth of the Labour Party in both Ipu West Ward and Ukwa Local Government Area.
Earlier, the Ukwa West Chairman of the party, Elder Ihenyerechi O. Dike inaugurated the Ipu West Ward Executive Committee.
The well attended ceremony had the following stakeholders in attendance; Ukwa West LP Campaign Coordinator, Hon. Anele Michael Azuh, Zonal State Assistant Secretary, Emma Ezekiel, LG Deputy Chairman, Uchechi Nwagwu, Women Leader, Mrs Prisca Ekpo and Secretary Felix Amadi Ulelu
