The Commandant General of the Neighborhood Enlightenment and Safety Organisation, NESO, Dr. Sani Aliyu, has advocated the establishment of a special Corps for Counter Terrorism.

Speaking on a Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, programme, Good Morning Nigeria, on Thursday, Aliyu said that the frequency of attacks of terrorists in Nigeria has made it imperative for the Federal Government to create a special Unit dedicated to fighting terrorism.

Aliyu’s call comes on the heels of the attack on the Kuje Custodial Centre by terrorists who have claimed to be members of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, ISWAP.

The Commandant General buttressed his view by citing the creation of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NCDSC, to fight vandalism as a critical function, by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

He expressed concerns that it has been difficult to hold a particular government security agency responsible for the failure of intelligence and capacity to frustrate and repel the attack on the Kuje Custodial Centre.

Aliyu recalled that former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), had to pointedly ask the Inspector General of Police during his regime about the whereabouts of the notorious armed robber then known as Anini that was terrorising Edo State.
