The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio has directed the Wailing Women of Niger Delta, WWND, to channel their demand for the constitution of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to President Muhammdu Buhari.

The Minister said the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs lacked the powers to constitute the Board.

The WWND had recently, in Port Harcourt, blocked the entrance of the headquarters of the NDDC to press for the dissolution of office of the Sole Administrator that has been running the Commission, constitution of a Board, and publication of the Forensic Audit Report.

The response of the Minister was contained in a letter signed by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Alfred A. Abah dated November 30th addressed to the Coordinator of the Wailing Women of Niger Delta (WWND), Odighonin Nwadighi.

Apart from recently blocking the entrance of the NDDC corporate headquarters in Port Harcourt, the women also wrote a letter to Akpabio on the matter.

The letter sent to Akpabio by the women was titled: Niger Delta women demand constitution of Niger Delta Development Commission board, publication of forensic audit report, dissolution of illegal Interim management committee and sole administratorship of the NDDC in the peace and development in the Niger Delta.

Addressing the women, the letter said: “I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated November 18, 2021 on the above subject and inform you that your requests are not within the powers of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

“Accordingly, I am further directed to advise that you kindly redirect your appeal to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria for his kind consideration.”
