Abia: Mayor Dike Nwankwo Commissions 10 Motorised Solar-Powered Boreholes Across Ukwa West…Targets 26 More

In line with the Mayor’s flagship initiative, “Operation Good Water Supply to Nde Asa,” Ukwa West Local Government has unveiled the first phase of a historic water intervention programme designed to deliver 36 motorised solar-powered boreholes across the 36 ancient villages of Asa.

Demonstrating that great achievements begin with deliberate steps, the People’s Mayor, Hon. Pst. Dike Briggs Nwankwo, has within the past few weeks completed 10 modern solar-powered boreholes. These installations are located in Obehie, Ikpokwu, Umuebulungwu, Umuelechi, Uzaku, Ogwe, Owaza, Umuikukor, Ozatta, and Obingwu.

These motorised solar-powered boreholes are fully automated, designed to operate without manual pumping or the burden of purchasing fuel—completely eliminating the challenges that previously hindered water access in many communities. This marks the first time Ukwa West is experiencing a water project of this modern standard and efficiency, and the Mayor deserves commendation for introducing such a transformative innovation to Nde Asa.

At the official commissioning held today, the Mayor selected one site from each of the three zones as symbolic commissioning points: Ikpokwu (Ozaa), Umuelechi (Ipu), and Ogwe (Asa Group).

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the Mayor expressed gratitude to the people and stakeholders from all zones for their solidarity and goodwill. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, stating:
“We understand the yearnings of our people and we are committed to making efforts to meet them. Every community in Asa will benefit from this initiative. None of the 36 ancient villages will be left out.”

At each commissioning point, local facilitators and community leaders applauded the Mayor’s visionary leadership. In Ogwe, Honourable Councillor Hon. Chioma Nwokoru praised the Mayor’s benevolence and pledged continued support. Similar commendations came from Hon. Mrs. Juliet Nwagbara at Umuelechi and Pst. Emeka Nwuju at Ikpokwu, who appealed for proper community maintenance of the boreholes while reaffirming loyalty to the administration.

The event attracted a large turnout of Asa stakeholders and members of the Mayor’s Cabinet, including but not limited to:

Deputy Mayor Hon. Pst. Joel Nwankwo; Leader Hon. Felix Ulelu; Deputy Leader Hon. John Nzube Adiele; Education Secretary Pst. Emeka Nwuju; Abia Arise LG Coordinator Hon.
