Abia Environment Commissioner Ogbonna Says Flood Mitigation Plans In Top Gear Across State

The Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to mitigating flooding and controlling erosion across Abia. He disclosed that comprehensive flood mitigation plans are already in top gear.

Speaking after an inspection of the ongoing Nine Fingers Erosion Mitigation Project at Umuchime Ossah in Umuahia North Local Government Area flood control site and Avonibube, Ubakala erosion site, Ogbonna said the visits were carried out on the directive of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti.

He added that the visit to the Nine Fingers Erosion Mitigation Project formed part of efforts to monitor the progress and quality of ongoing environmental intervention projects, while the on-the-spot assessment of the erosion site at Avonibube, Ubakala, enabled officials of the Ministry of Environment to witness first-hand the extent of the devastation caused by flooding.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the quality of work executed at site, noting that the project is being implemented to the highest standards to protect communities, safeguard critical infrastructure, and prevent further environmental degradation.

He reiterated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti remains committed to delivering impactful infrastructure and environmental projects that improve the lives of residents across the state. He also commended the host communities for their patience, cooperation, and unwavering support throughout the implementation of the projects.

Also speaking during the inspection, the Director of Flood and Erosion Control in the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Obinna Onyebuchi, disclosed that the drainage system at the erosion site would be covered and constructed in a way that protects nearby residential buildings while ensuring efficient floodwater management.

He assured residents that the project is on schedule and is expected to be completed by next month, providing a lasting solution to flooding and erosion challenges in the affected communities.
