2027: Former Abia Assembly Chief Whip, Tony Mezie Nwubani Declares Interest To Contest For House of Representatives

As political activities heat up ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Tony Mezie Nwubani, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

Nwubani, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, made his declaration in a public statement released on Saturday, September 13, 2025. He described himself as eminently qualified for the position, citing over two decades of experience in governance and legislative matters.

Hon. Nwubani entered politics in 2004, representing his ward in the Ukwa West Legislative Council from 2004 to 2006, where he rose to become Majority Leader. He was later elected to the Abia State House of Assembly in 2011 and was re-elected for a second term in 2015 into the same House, where he served as Chief Whip of the Assembly.

He was a Special Adviser on Legislative Matters to former Abia State Governor, a position he held until 2023.

Nwubani stated that his deep familiarity with the aspirations and challenges of the Ukwa people uniquely positions him to represent them effectively in the National Assembly.

“I am conversant with the needs, political trajectory, and neglect of my people in Ukwa. I know their challenges can only be adequately addressed through strong legislative representation. With over a decade of legislative experience, I am well-prepared to be their voice in the green chamber,” he said.

He further noted that Ukwa Federal Constituency deserves a stronger presence in national politics, adding that his background in both business and governance gives him the versatility needed to deliver tangible results.

Nwubani’s love for his people earned him a sobriquet: Mezie Ukwa.
