A Chieftain of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, has expressed his faith in God that He would not allow the choice the people of Abia State made during the last gubernatorial election to be overturned by unprogressive elements in the State.
In a press statement dated May 24, 2023, Ogbonna, who is one of the prominent leaders of the LP in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, described as untoward the latest moves being made by some persons in the State to truncate the swearing-in of the Abia State governor-elect, Dr. Alex Otti, arguing that since some political parties that lost the governorship election had filed cases before the Abia State Election Petition Tribunal, there were no conceivable reasons for anybody to resort to filing obviously frivolous cases before any other court in the country.
He stated that the massive celebrations that greeted the pronouncement of Otti as governor-elect across Abia State, and even beyond, was a clear demonstration that he won overwhelmingly in the election.
He also cautioned that any act that supplants the wishes of the majority of the people of Abia State has the potency of resulting in actions capable of leading to avoidable crisis, adding that the peace and stability of the State were of utmost importance at this time in the political history of Abia State.
His statement reads in part:
“I have been monitoring with keen interest the various reports in the media as it relates to attempts being made by certain unprogressive minds to ensure that Dr. Alex Otti, the governor-elect of Abia State is not sworn-in on the 29th of May, 2023.
“It was very sad reading about the retrogressive judgement on the candidature of Dr. Alex Otti that emanated from a Federal High Court in Kano State. The alarm raised by my party and the governor-elect to the effect that some persons were still planning to get another court judgement to stop the actualisation of a new and different government in Abia State is also a major source of worry.
“The fact remains that these developments, which smacks of desperation by some disillusioned elements, should cause concerned Abians sleepless nights, as they are geared towards killing the joy of the majority of the people of Abia State.”
Ogbonna prayed God to complete the good work He has started in Abia State by frustrating all the evil plans of all those that do not wish the State well.
